A fifth-grader from Maquoketa Valley has won the American Legion’s State Flag Essay Contest.
That’s Anna Deutmeyer, reading part of her essay to KMCH after she learned she was the state winner Monday morning. Over three thousand students across Iowa wrote essays about what the flag means to them, with winners chosen on the local and regional levels before the state competition. Earlville Legion Commander Loras Mensen says it’s the first time a local winner has gone on to win at the state level.
In Anna’s essay, she writes that when she sees the flag, she thinks of her dad and grandpa who were in the military – and that the flag means a lot to her because she wants to be in the military someday too. Mensen says as a veteran, it’s pretty special to read the kids’ essays and find out what the flag means to them.
