The 2016 West Delaware varsity softball team hopes to improve on what some of them were a part of a season ago. The first year under head coach Tiffany Rave consisted of a 25-15 record and a close frustrating, controversial 1-0 Regional Final loss to Waverly-Shell Rock. Six seniors are gone from last years squad but five starters return to the lineup. Four of those girls had over 100 at bats with three of them having an average of above 300. Coach Rave says that varsity game experience will be a big key for this years roster:
Just two seniors return to lead the way in Kristen Wegmann and Bridget Hoffman. Coach Rave has been pleased with their efforts in assuming that leadership role as she expected they would:
Among the players who will be missed this season include all-conference standout Emily Thole who led last years team in most of the offensive categories including stolen bases and became the career hits leader in program history:
The Hawks do return both pitchers who competed last season with Wegmann and Freshman Emily Klostermann, Coach Rave knows they both focused on off-season improvement and are determined to help carry the squad from inside the circle:
Coach Rave doesn’t stress that it’s all about winning, success certainly helps with a positive culture but she believes her girls realize what it takes to become a quality team:
The Hawks open their season next week on the road, Tuesday night at Waterloo Columbus and Wednesday in Eldridge against North Scott before being home to host Williamsburg in their first WaMaC Conference doubleheader on Thursday night.
