By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:
The thrill for any Baseball player or coach at the amateur level was nearly lived out for 36 Monticello High School Baseball players and 4 coaches this past Saturday afternoon. Their ‘Under the Arch’ experience was cut short because of consistent rains in the St Louis area all weekend. The game against Wilton that was supposed to begin a half hour after the Major League game between the host Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers never happened because slippery field conditions and impending rain in the forecast. Monticello 5th-year head coach Josh Soper talked about the opportunity the program was given:
The team did enjoy the bonding experience that consisted of a combined team meal with Wilton on Friday night at a downtown St. Louis restaurant as well as being allowed on the field for batting practice before the rains came. Coach Soper was very appreciative of the support from the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Organization:
The Panthers at 17-8 will have 4 non-conference games this week before they begin their postseason next Tuesday night in Dyersville.
Williamsburg and Washington were slated to play after Sunday afternoon’s ballgame but were rained out as well. Raider Freshmen coach Nathan King, a Manchester native and West Delaware 2008 graduate was denied of his chance to coach in a game on the field of his beloved Cardinals but still was able to take in the twice rain delayed MLB game and witnessed a Cards victory.

Hawks 2nd-year head coach Tiffany Rave says it’s no secret what is on the line tonight in Clinton County and her team is looking forward to it:
The 2011 squad shared first place with Solon and the last Hawks team to win an outright division conference title was the 2008 team. This group tries to become the 19th WD Softball WaMaC Conference champions since 1968.
