Elkader is recovering after major flooding hit the community late last week.
The Turkey River crested in Elkader at 22.5 feet Friday morning. Elkader Mayor Josh Pope says they spent Wednesday and Thursday making flood preparations.
Friday’s crest was five feet below the 2008 record, but still enough to cause problems.
Pope says they’ll continue cleaning up from the flood this week. He says the volunteer effort – both before and after the flood – has been incredible.
Garber also saw some major flooding, with the Turkey River cresting at 23.6 feet Friday night. The river dropped below flood stage in both communities on Saturday.
