Popular Oelwein Restaurant Destroyed By Fire

OELWEIN, Iowa (AP) – Investigators are trying to determine what caused a kitchen fire that spread quickly and destroyed a longtime restaurant in the northeast Iowa town of Oelwein.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports Luigi’s Restaurant and Lounge was destroyed Saturday. The restaurant had operated since 1959.
The fire began around 3:15 p.m. Saturday while the restaurant was open, but everyone was able to get out of the building safely.
The flames continued to burn into the evening until authorities used construction equipment to knock down the walls.
Fire Chief Wallace Rundle says the restaurant is a total loss after the fire. The only thing left standing was the sign in the parking lot topped by Luigi’s signature rooster.
