By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The official start to the high school girls basketball season is tonight around the state. Area games include; East Buchanan @ Central Elkader and Edgewood-Colesburg @ Decorah.

The West Delaware girls and boys teams will continue their preseasons with the annual Hall of Pride scrimmages against Waterloo West Saturday at West Delaware High School this year. Hawk girls 2nd-year head coach Rod Conrad says his teams depth is hopefully the main strength of this years group and that the scrimmage will be a good measuring stick for his varsity squad:

The Hawks start for real Monday night at Waverly-Shell Rock.

The Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge is a statewide community service initiative providing an opportunity for schools to come together and have a positive impact. Not only will proceeds from the game be donated to the Iowa Hall of Pride, but both teams will be participating in a community service project. Both West Delaware High School and Waterloo West High School will be eligible for statewide recognition and a chance to receive one of five $500 grants for most outstanding community service project in the state.  Admission for Saturday’s games will be $5 for adults and students, which is good for all six games.
