The 2016-17 High School Girls Basketball season officially began over the weekend for a few area schools. On Friday night, Ed-Co started with a 39-28 win over Decorah. East Buchanan fell to Clayton Ridge 52-43. On Saturday night, Beckman notched a 48-36 victory against Dubuque Senior.
In preseason exhibition play at Seedorff Gymnasium in the Hall of Pride Scrimmages, the West Delaware Hawk Girls lost to Class 5A 14th-ranked Waterloo West 67-32. The Hawks will begin their season for real tonight on the road in Waverly taking on Class 4A 3rd-rated Waverly-Shell Rock. The Go-Hawks return everyone except two seniors from a team that went 19-4 last season and was a Regional Finalist, losing to eventual 4A champ Mason City. The Hawks lost 5 seniors but return 5 players with varsity experience including 2nd leading scorer, Haley Lyness. Second-year head coach Rod Conrad says he is hopeful for a good start to the season as some very tough competition right off the bat will get his team ready to battle:
The Hawks lost to W-SR last year to start the season in Manchester on Nov. 24th, 2015 by the score of 49-30. All the coverage live tonight on KMCH and KMCH.com around 7:30pm with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Bill Logan.
Also on Saturday night, the West Delaware Boys won their scrimmage 73-48 over Waterloo West without the services of senior center John Nagel who was resting his sore back. The Hawks will start their season next Tuesday at Williamsburg.
