Many area schools took to the mats on Saturday for the first weekend tournaments of the 2016 season.
In Manchester- West Delaware had two champions at the Bob Murphy Invitational as sophomore Mitchel Mangold and junior Harrison Goebel took home individual titles for the Hawks. Mangold pinned his way through the tournament picking up falls in 3:42, 1:12, and a 4:23 fall over Justin McCunn of Red Oak in the finals. Goebel was equally as dominate on the way to the finals as he scored two major decisions in the first two rounds before defeating Drew Durant of DeWitt 11-4 in the championship match. As a team the Hawks finished in fifth place with 143 points while Decorah won the team title with 185 points which was 13 points better than second place Davenport Assumption. In Monticello- The Panthers hosted three other area schools for the Guilford Invitational as they had one champion and two runner up finishes on their way to a sixth place finish. Junior Tyler Kulper won the heavyweight title winning 2-1 in the finals over Carson Webster of Marion, while sophomores Chase Luensman and Lake Stahlberg finished second at 113 and 195 pounds. Beckman finished the day in third place with three individual champions in junior Jake Recker at 138 pounds, junior Luke Hageman at 160 pounds, and sophomore Owen Grover at 170 pounds. Anamosa finished in fifth place as Morgan Rowley won the 126 pound title, while Kal Hoeger and Spencer Amling led the way for Ed-Co by finishing in second place as the Vikings finished in eighth place. In Fairbank- North Linn had three champions at the Chris Davis Tournament at Wapsie Valley on their way to a third place team finish as seniors Dalton Bell at 113 pounds, Brock Henderson at 120 pounds, and Kyler Schott at heavyweight all took home titles. For complete results click HERE
In Williamsburg- The East Buchanan wrestling team wrestled in a four team dual tournament and finished in third place going 1-2 on the day. The Buccaneers lost their first dual 46-28 to Center Point-Urbana, they then defeated Belle Plaine 48-24, and fell to Williamsburg 58-15. For complete results click HERE
In Dubuque- Western Dubuque crowned six champions on their way to a Dubuque Invitational team title as they were 36 points better than second place Dubuque Hempstead. The six Bobcat champions were Jacob Close at 113 pounds, Nathan Betts at 126, Bradan Birt at 132 pounds, Max Lyon at 182, Luke Kluesner at 195, and Aaron Costello at heavyweight. In Independence- The Independence wrestling team hosted one of biggest tournaments in the state on Saturday as their invitational had 25 teams including three of the top 10 teams in class 3A from last year’s state tournament, five of the top 11 teams from the class 2A state tournament, and the champion and runner up from last year’s state tournament in class 1A. The Mustangs finished the two day tournament in 18th place as Andrue Wright led the way with a sixth place finish. For complete results click HERE
