Franklin Delano “Frankie” Lee, 84, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood of natural causes.
Frankie was born on November 10, 1932, on a farmstead near Edgewood, the first born son of Henry G. and Voretta B. (Hall) Lee. In 1938, the family moved to a farm north of Manchester where Frankie enjoyed playing outdoors and helping with the chores. Tragically, he was witness to the death of his younger sister who was struck and killed by a passing motorist on his first day of kindergarten. As a result of this traumatic event, Frankie was diagnosed with developmental disability and was admitted to the Woodward State Hospital and School where he received care and guidance for the next 22 years. Frankie then resided at the Penn Center in Delhi, Iowa, and finally, became a resident at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in 2013.
Frankie’s world was unique in that he viewed life through the eyes of a small child. He approached new experiences with tremendous enthusiasm and treasured personal relationships with his family, wonderful care-givers, and friends. Frankie loved parades, birthday parties, Santa Claus, eating at the Pizza Ranch, and enjoying outings with his beloved sister, Anna Rizer, and his brother, Lawrence Lee. He was very fond of the medals he earned through participation in the Special Olympics and often wore them around his neck with the pride of a true champion. Frankie enjoyed musical entertainment and was never shy when it came to showing his appreciation and admiration for performers. One of the songs he enjoyed most was “You Are My Sunshine” and sang it often.
People choose to react to difficult challenges in many different ways. Frankie chose to be joyful, he never seemed to question his circumstances, and he made others smile. He was like a dose of sunshine for those who loved him and he will surely be missed.
Frankie was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Voretta Lee; his dear sister, Dorothy Jean; and his brother, Jerry Joe. He is survived by his sister Anna (Kerry) Rizer; his brother, Lawrence Lee; his aunt, Thelma Grimm; and his many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
