Independence Couple Pleads Guilty to Setting House on Fire

Authorities believe an Independence couple set their own house on fire – on purpose.

The Buchanan County Attorney’s Office says an investigation shows 31-year old Brandon Dorsey and 28-year old Jessi Dorsey intentionally caused a fire at their home at 302 8th Avenue Northeast in September 2014.

Following the fire, a fundraising account was set up for the Dorsey family at a local bank, in which they received monetary donations from the community, as well as students from the Independence Community School District. They also received many donations of items and gift cards, as well as assistance from the Red Cross. Restitution added up to over 40-thousand dollars.

The Dorseys pleaded guilty to Second Degree Arson in Buchanan County District Court on Tuesday.

Both are scheduled to be sentenced on February 14th.
