Class 1A first round contests opened the curtain on the high school girls basketball postseason last night. In Edgewood, East Buchanan got off to a quick 7-0 start before the Vikings went on a 18-11 run to take a 5-point lead at halftime. Ed-Co maintained the lead until the 4th quarter when EB took it back and held on for good winning 53-52. The game featured 5 ties and 7 lead changes. First-year Bucs head coach Nathan Reck talked about his teams mindset after the rough ending to the first half:
Both teams struggled from the free-throw line as Ed-Co shot 11 of 27 while EB made just 4 of 17. The Buccaneers were able to make up for it from 3-point land as they hit 7 trey’s, 4 by Nicole Pettinger who led the way with 21 points, Olivia Donlea had 16, Becca Walthart scored 10 off the bench and Erica Hoffman added 6. Ed-Co senior Kaitlyn Ronnebaum tied her career high with 30-points while Hannah Hess had 7 for the Vikings who ended their season at 8-14, said goodbye to 6 seniors. Besides Ronnebaum and Hess, Kyann Braden, Brylyn Clute, Mazie Nurre and Marissa Vorwald all will gradute from the program. The victory for the Bucs ended a long losing streak to Ed-Co, having loss 10 in a row beating the Vikings for the first time since Feb. 5th, 2010. The win also was the first postseason W for EB since Feb. 7th, 2013. Coach Reck is very proud of the hard work his squad has given to get to this point:
