The fourth ranked Western Dubuque wrestling team qualified for the 2017 state duals last night as they defeated 10th ranked Dubuque Hempstead 40-30 in the regional dual final. Hempstead started the night with a 48-20 victory over Bettendorf in the semifinal to set up the match-up with the Bobcats, a match-up that started at 120 pounds and saw three different ties before Western Dubuque sealed the dual win. The dual was tied at 18 all after the first seven matches with both coaches shifting their lineups trying to get the most favorable match-ups and it was Western Dubuque winning three matches, all by falls from Nathan Betts at 126 pounds, Bradan Birt at 132, and Evan Ellis at 152 pounds, while Hempstead had two decisions and two falls including one at 160 pounds to tie the dual. Devin Ludwig picked up an 8-2 win at 170 pounds, and at 182 Kameron Kramer overcame an early take down by picking up a reversal and putting Kent Kragenbrink on his back recording a fall in 1:42 to put the Bobcats up 27-18. Freddie Hosch followed with an 11-6 decision at 195, and Max Lyon added a 9-1 major decision at 220 pounds before top ranked heavyweight Aaron Costello pinned seventh ranked Jack Roussel in 1:51 sealing the dual meet victory for the Bobcats which allowed them to forfeit the final two weights to save their wrestlers for Saturday’s district meet. Western Dubuque head coach Paul Cleary says it was a great night for the Western Dubuque community:
The Bobcats will now take on Waverly-Shell Rock in the first round of the state duals at 11:00 am next Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Cleary says his team has continued to get better every meet out and looks forward to the rest of the season:
Western Dubuque will be in action this Saturday as they will travel to Waverly for their district tournament.
