Support The Arts!

As I anxiously await tonight’s Episodes of “Nashville” and “Sun Records” on CMT, I am contemplating what it means to have a thriving music scene here in Eastern Iowa. Closer to home here in Manchester, we are so blessed to have some wonderful venues to satisfy our want for entertainment.

Thanks to the West Delaware Friends of Music and the Hanson Foundation we will get to see a real live opera Friday night featuring the Des Moines Metro Opera performing an all-English version of “The Barber of Seville”.  The performers will also be holding workshops for the students of West Delaware during the day on Friday.  I hope the students truly appreciate this opportunity, and that our community appreciates what it means to have such fine organizations such as the Friends of Music and the Hanson Foundation committed to bringing this type of art to our area. And it goes without saying how fortunate we are that the Hansons and others generously donated the funds to give our students such a wonderful auditorium to perform.  By the way – the Red Carpet Gala is March 18th – a great way to see some of the best high school show choirs that Iowa has to offer, and support the West Delaware Music Department.

Another great opportunity to support the school is the Post-Prom fundraiser at Cooper’s Place in Ryan Friday night.  Guest Bartenders will be donating their tips to the upcoming Post-Prom event.  Music will be provided by the band formerly known as the “Not Quite Brothers Band” (I’m kind of partial to a couple guys in that band).

Ed-Co is hosting a fun event Friday night as well featuring the high school band and choir.  It’s their “dessert show” at the Edgewood Locker Events Center that starts at 7:00.

Then there is yesterday’s announcement by the Delaware County Fair that Sawyer Brown and Little Texas will be gracing the stage at the fair in July.  I’m excited for this one.  Jeannie and the fair board work hard to keep our fair one of the top county fairs in Iowa.

There are several more chances in the month of March to get out and see some wonderful performances in the area which I will write about in the future.

Whether it’s supporting the high school kids, or checking out the “weekend warriors” who are out playing in the bars for the simple love of music, I hope you’ll take time to enjoy and appreciate what we have right here in Delaware County.
