HS Girls Track And Field: West Delaware To Host Early Bird Meet

The West Delaware girls track team will kick off its outdoor season tonight as they host their early bird meet in Manchester. This year’s Hawk team will be relatively young, but head coach Doug Engel says early on in the season he is looking to get the girls acclimated to running at a varsity level:

The Hawks do return all of their state meet participants from a year ago as senior Jamie Glanz qualified in the high jump, while fellow senior Katelyn Mangold, juniors Lauren Collier and Kira Vaske, and sophomore Sabrina Welcher all return after running in the 4×200, 4×400, and sprint medley relay teams at the state meet while Mangold also competed in the 200 meter dash. With the state meet experience coming back Engel will rely on them to provide leadership to the younger girls:

Engel always wants his team do well, but for the first meet out he is looking to see how the girls perform and start finding the right fit for each of the them:

East Buchanan, Edgewood-Colesburg, Independence, Maquoketa Valley, and Starmont will also compete at the West Delaware Early Bird which gets underway at 4:30.
