A Fayette County man faces several felony charges after stealing a vehicle that was found several counties away.
Mount Vernon Police say 20-year old Tyler Kelley of West Union led their officers on a pursuit early Sunday morning. During a traffic stop, they discovered the black Chevy Silverado pickup Kelley was driving did not match registration information. As the officer was speaking to him, Kelley put the truck in reverse and rammed the police cruiser behind him several times before fleeing the scene.
The chase led the suspect and authorities on Highway 30 eastbound, then south on Highway 1, and then west on Highway 30 in the eastbound lanes of traffic. Kelley’s speed reached at least 100 miles per hour at times in 55 mile per hour zones. Officers lost sight of the truck when Kelley took gravel roads in Mechanicsville.
In the meantime, officers discovered the truck he was driving was reported stolen to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office last Thursday. They also learned Kelley was wanted for escaping the West Union Residential Facility.
The stolen truck was found abandoned about an hour later in Clarence. Kelley was tracked down in Clarence about eight hours later. He was taken into custody and faces several felony charges, including assaulting a police officer, eluding and vehicle theft.
