By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:
Class 1A high school baseball district semifinals took place last night around the state. Top-ranked North Linn hosted Maquoketa Valley and came away with a 2-0 shutout victory. It was a contest made for the fans of pitching over hitting as MV junior Tyson Tucker and Lynx sophomore Jake Hilmer combined for 19 strikeouts and gave up just six hits total. Eleventh-year head coach Travis Griffith knew it had the potential of being that kind of game and talked about the mindset his team had to have coming in:
Hilmer allowed four hits and struck out 13 Wildcat batters while walking and hitting none. His control and the way he worked MV hitters contained the Wildcats offense by stranding 3 runners on base:
Lynx junior Ryan Miller scored both of their runs, while getting one of only two North Linn hits, the first on a RBI sac fly by junior Sean Boardman in the third then he walked and came across on an error in the 5th. Miller as a four-year starter is one of the key leaders on the team and knows what it takes to be successful in the postseason as they embark on their third district final in a row:
First-year Maquoketa Valley head coach Eric Connor was proud of his teams effort against the well experienced Lynx:
The Wildcats ended at 18-14 and say goodbye to five seniors; Alec McDowell, Zak Harbach, Colin Wendt, Kyle Wilson and Clint Krapfl. North Linn improves to 39-2 and will host Alburnett in the district 7 final Saturday night at 7pm. The Pirates won 3-2 on a walk-off error committed by Belle Plaine in the bottom of the 7th inning in game one of the doubleheader at North Linn.
Lisbon was a 5-4 winner over Calamus-Wheatland and advance to the district 9 final taking on Durant Saturday night.
