Body of Truck Driver Found in Wapsi River

The body of a truck driver who crashed into the Wapsi River near Independence has been recovered.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says they first received a report of a box truck in the river under Highway 20 east of Independence late Friday morning. Authorities say the truck had been traveling westbound on Highway 20 at the Wapsipinicon River Bridge when, for unknown reasons, the truck went off the road, into the median and collided with the guardrail before vaulting off the bridge embankment and into the river.

The westbound lanes of Highway 20 were closed as crews removed the truck from the river, but the driver’s body was not found until two days later.

On Sunday morning, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a body floating in the Wapsi River near the river access in Quasqueton. The body has been identified as 58-year old Michael Wallace of Hazelcrest, Illinois.

The Iowa State Patrol is still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
