The town of McGregor is trying to get back to normal after a small tornado struck its historic downtown area last Wednesday night. McGregor Chamber President Katie Ruff says most of the downtown businesses have reopened.
The EF-1 twister, with wind speeds of up to 110 miles an hour, hit McGregor’s Main Street. Two buildings had to be demolished. Jim Engle, who heads the Iowa Downtown Resource Center, says his organization plans to work with the Clayton County town to help preserve its historic character through the cleanup and recovery.
No one was seriously injured in last week’s tornado, but a 72-year-old man died last Friday in a tractor rollover while cleaning up storm damage.
