A longtime Manchester business building is coming down this week.
The old Smitty’s property on West Main Street is under demolition. The tire and appliance business, which had been hit with several floods in recent years, had been in the community for six decades until it abruptly closed two years ago.
The City of Manchester purchased the property for 235-thousand dollars from Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank. City Manager Tim Vick says Bob Stephen Motors purchased the back warehouse from the City for 100-thousand dollars, helping to off-set that cost.
So what does the City plan to do with the empty lot? Vick says they’ll beautify the area as part of the initial phase of Manchester’s downtown improvements.
The main portion of the building was demolished by the end of the day on Tuesday. Demolition should be complete in two to three weeks.
