By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

Area high school football teams with week one games are into their second week of preseason practice including West Delaware who is coming off an 8-2 campaign last season. The Hawks are a top-5 Class 3A team in certain preseason polls as they feature 18 letter winners and 14 returning starters. Hawks 14th-year head coach Doug Winkowitsch says despite losing key quality players from last years playoff team, there is plenty of talent on this years squad:

The Hawks will hold their annual Silver Bowl scrimmage on Brown Field this Friday night during the WD Athletic Boosters membership drive. The freshmen and sophomore’s will start the evening scrimmaging at 6:15, followed by team introduction’s of the Cross Country, Volleyball and Football rosters before the varsity takes the field around 7:30.

Week zero of the season also takes place this Friday for teams who need to a play a week early because of schedule conflicts. Independence will host Dike-New Hartford in a Fresh/Soph and Varisty doubleheader starting at 5pm.
