HS Football: Beckman Preparing For Highway 20 Rivals

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The annual meeting of the highway 20 Western Dubuque School District teams takes place this Friday night in Dyersville as the Beckman Blazers host the Bobcats of Western Dubuque. Beckman came in with expectations for a winning season after a 4-5 campaign a year ago, their first losing season since 2009. The Blazers had a fine start to their season last week with a 58-0 home win over Clayton Ridge. Fourth-year Blazer head coach Jim Derr says he is pleased about all the positives his squad has going for it right now:

Several members of the varsity team were a part of the state championship baseball program in late July and coach Derr is glad to have that winning attitude on his roster:

Western Dubuque is also 1-0 after winning their season opener last Friday night, beating Dubuque Wahlert 12-10. Coach Derr knows what kind of mindset it takes when they face one of their biggest rivals:

The Bobcats, who won the meeting last season 28-17 in Epworth, have won the last three games and 4 of the last 6 contests dating back to 2011.
