HS VOLLEYBALL: WD Hawks Ready to Begin WaMaC East Schedule

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The 2017 West Delaware Hawks Volleyball team will begin regular season weeknight play while starting up the WaMaC East division tonight on the road in Mount Vernon. Twenty second-year head coach Brett Mather comments on the Mustangs and the East side of the conference:

Mount Vernon is the 12th-ranked team in Class 3A after a 34-8 season last year finishing in the semifinal’s of the state tournament. The Mustangs were 2nd behind the Hawks in the East division last season. This season they are 1-1 while West Delaware is rated third and sits at 3-3 after a few early season injuries have slowed them down. Coach Mather talks about the importance of setting short term goals for his team:

The Hawks lost a regional final in West Union at North Fayette-Valley High School to Osage, 3-1, last November and posted a 42-5 record. WD has been to state 10 times in the past 14 seasons, coach Mather definitely remembers that feeling of not making it and knows it is motivation for his players as well:

The freshmen and sophomores will take the floor starting at 5pm then all the coverage live from Mount Vernon around 7:20pm tonight on KMCH and KMCH.com with Jamie Vaske and Joan Salow.
