The East Buchanan Buccaneers defeated Maquoketa Valley in Delhi last night 3-1 in a Class 2A region 7 second round play and advanced to a regional semifinal for the first time in program history. The Wildcats won game one 25-20 then the momentum switched to EB and the Bucs won the final three sets, 25-11, 26-24 and 25-23. The season series was evened up after MV won 2 out of 3 matches on the season. The overall series since 2007 belongs to the Wildcats 14-8 in the past 22 meetings. Seventh-year head coach Kayla Gallup shared her thoughts on what she told her team throughout the match:
Maquoketa Valley was led by Payton Ries who had 10 kills, Maci Frieburger and Macy Hoeger with 6, Emerson Whittenbaugh with 5, Olivia Hoeger had 2 and Maddy Anderegg, Brooke Wilson and Lydia Helle all added 1. MV ends their season at 13-16 and says goodbye to 6 seniors; Macy Hoeger, Madison Imler, Hunter Glass, Abby Holtz, Adrianne Supple and Ries.
The Bucs have had a history making season by becoming the winningest squad since 1995 and achieving the most wins in matches and sets in program history with their marks of 21-10 and 53-26. Coach Gallup who is a 2007 EB graduate couldn’t be prouder of what this group has accomplished and talks about what it took to get here:
East Buchanan will now face top-ranked and Class 3A defending state champion Dike-New Hartford Thursday night at 7pm in Jesup. Coach Gallup knows it will be quite the challenge but believing they can compete is the first step:
