There are plans for another confined feeding operation in Delaware County – if the DNR gives its approval.
The DNR and the Delaware County Board of Supervisors visited the potential site of the operation last week. It sits west of Ryan on 125th Avenue just north of D-47. Bob and Josh Hellmann of J. Mann, LLC would like to construct two hog confinement buildings southeast of their present buildings. The confined feeding operation would have the potential to house just over five thousand market hogs.
The Supervisors say the site met all requirements. They held a public hearing on the issue Monday. One neighbor admitted she hoped they’d never have a hog confinement in the neighborhood, but says she understands people “need to make a living”. The Supervisors assured her that the Hellmanns are taking extra steps to be a good neighbor in this process – that includes possibly putting up a tree filter to help keep the smell at the site.
The Supervisors will draft a letter of recommendation to the DNR, who will then make a final decision on the confined feeding operation plans.
