HS VOLLEYBALL: Beckman and Independence Advance To State Tournament

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

Class 3A, 4A and 5A Regional Finals took place around the state last night. Two KMCH area coverage schools earned a spot at the 2017 state high school volleyball tournament in Cedar Rapids next week.

Our KMCH Sports featured match had the 3A 9th-ranked Beckman Blazers beat No. 7 Davenport Assumption 3-1 in Anamosa giving the Blazers the Region 7 title. Beckman won set one, 25-17 then fell in game two 25-20 before they regained the momentum and won the last two games, 25-19 and 25-22. For Beckman it’s their first trip back to the state tourney since 2006 and 6th ever in program history since 1994. Blazer head coach and Activities Director Todd Troutman talks about the feeling of getting back to state:

Junior front row player Ellie Bildstein who helped lead the Blazers offense all night shared her emotions on the outcome and mentioned the late Tom Jenk Jr., whose spirit was definitely felt by all who knew him inside the gym last night:

Coach Troutman who knew and worked with Coach Jenk for 20 plus years expanded on those thoughts about the man that the Beckman family lost on Sunday:

Beckman improved to 31-12 and received the 6th seed in the Class 3A bracket and will open up state tournament play next Wednesday morning at 10am facing No. 3           33-8 Waterloo Columbus.

Independence traveled to Center Point and swept the host Stormin’ Pointers 3-0, winning 25-18, 25-20 and 25-22. The Mustangs reach state for the second time ever, first since 2013. 33-8 Indee got the 8th seed and will go up against #1  31-9 Cedar Rapids Xavier next Tuesday in a Class 4A quarterfinal at 6pm.

Tonight one more area coverage team tries to make the state tourney as Class 1A 4th-rated Starmont takes on #9 Iowa Valley in Center Point. All the coverage live on KMCH and KMCH.com around 6:50pm with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Julie Vaske.
