Day one of the 47th annual high school volleyball state tournament at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids featured all of the Class 5A and 4A quarterfinals.
Our lone area coverage match saw Independence end their season against top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier 3-0, falling 25-16, 25-10 and 25-23 in 58 minutes. The Mustangs close at 33-9 and say goodbye to 5 seniors.

In 3A, the 6th-seeded 31-12 Beckman Blazers take on third-seeded 33-8 Waterloo Columbus. Beckman won the only meeting of the season back on September 2nd in the Mount Vernon invite, 2-1. Blazers head coach Todd Troutman talks about his team and the match-up:
The 4th-seeded 30-5 Starmont Stars face the 5th-seed Holy Trinity of Fort Madison. Stars head coach Robert Goedken comments on getting back to the tourney after their first appearance last season his teams identity and their opponent:
