Duane J. “Harry” Heiderscheit, 74, of Holy Cross died peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, surrounded by his family at home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Visitation will be held from 2-8 pm Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross. Visitation will also be held from 9:30-10:30 am Saturday, Dec. 2, at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross prior to funeral services.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. A private burial service will be held at a later date. Rev. Noah Diehm will officiate.
Harry was born May 2, 1943, in Holy Cross, the son of Harold and Josephine (Hefel) Heiderscheit. He graduated from Holy Cross High School with the class of 1961. He married Donna Mae Schueller on May 15, 1965, in Sherrill, Iowa. Together they raised their family & farmed near the Holy Cross area. Harry also ran Harry’s Place in Holy Cross from 1998 – 2001. After retiring from farming and Harry’s Place in 2001, he began working for Steger Construction. He was very active in the community, selling raffle tickets for the HC Athletic Club and Fire Department.
Harry was a family man who loved watching his children and grandchildren in their sports, and going on a recent family vacation to South Dakota, where Harry and Donna honeymooned and revisited upon their 25th Anniversary. He was an honest and sociable person with a sense of humor which people of all ages enjoyed. He played softball for many years, loved gambling, following the Hawkeyes and Cubs and a good game of Euchre.
Survivors include his wife, Donna, 5 children: Patrick and Dave, both of Holy Cross, Steve (Desiree Pope) and Peggy (Tim) Stockel, both of Dubuque and Debbie (fiancé Phil Bemer) Klein of Ely, IA; 15 grandchildren: Billy, Clint, Danny and Sabrina Heiderscheit, Jake, Jordyn, Delaney, Devyn and Jackson Heiderscheit, Gage Heffernan, Shyla and Carissa Stockel, Alyssa (Quintin) Embray, Mariah Klein and Austyn Bemer; 1 great grandchild, Alivia Embray, who is expecting a brother in February; siblings: Lyle (Pat) Heiderscheit of Bankston, Ed (Myrene) Heiderscheit of Peosta, Linda (Jerry) Brenke of Dubuque, Laura Brokish of Cleveland, TN, and Roger (Judie) Heiderscheit of Holy Cross, Ron (Elaine) Heiderscheit of Dixon, IL; in-laws: Helen Heiderscheit of Dubuque, Dorothy Kennicker Crews, Diane Boge, Joe Schueller and Bonnie (Jerome) Garner, all of Dubuque, Ron (Doris) Schueller of Pflugerville, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Daniel, parents-in-law, Joseph and Stella (Leonard Backes) Schueller; in-laws: Eugene Schueller, Leon Kennicker, Francis Crews, Ron Boge, Deb Schueller.
