HS BASKETBALL: Friday Preview

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

A Friday night lineup of high school basketball is on the horizon tonight. Our featured game from KMCH Sports will be area girls coverage in Delhi as the Class 2A 11th-ranked 6-1 Wildcats of Maquoketa Valley host top-ranked 7-0 North Linn in a Tri-Rivers Conference match-up.  The Lynx were a semifinalist at last season’s state tournament with a 24-2 mark and have won 20 plus games for the past 7 seasons. Fourteenth-year head coach Brian Wheatley talks about the experience coming back on his roster and what positives he likes about his team so far:

The Lynx are averaging 68 points per game offensively and have won 5 of their games by 38 or more points. Still despite those impressive numbers coach Wheatley knows there is always room for improvement and he knows their main players need to play even when games are in their control:

Coach Wheatley knows there is never any looking past any team in the TRC but especially not their opponent tonight:

Maquoketa Valley is coming off of a 19-5 season and brings back solid varsity experience despite losing all-state guard Brianna Mensen who is playing at perennial Juco power Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Wildcats 12th-year head coach Scot Moenck comments on how his team is trying to overcome that loss:

It has been a struggle to find consistency at times in the first few weeks of the new campaign as they have had to deal with adversity in the form of injuries and illnesses:

Coach Moenck who picked up his 200th victory at MV last Friday night in Lisbon talks about the quality of the Tri-Rivers Conference once again which is no surprise to him:

Because of those injuries and sicknesses right now in the MV girls program the JV game has been cancelled for tonight, the JV boys will play at 6pm in the high school gym followed by the varsity girls contest. The varsity boys game will be played on Saturday, January 13th in part of the first of two Boys Rivalry Saturday events at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. All the coverage from Delhi tonight can be heard live on KMCH and KMCH.com with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Bill Logan starting around 7:30pm.
