Many area wrestling teams returned to the mat for the first tournaments of the new year on Saturday.
In Van Horne: West Delaware, Independence, and North Linn were all at the Benton Community Invitational on Saturday. West Delaware had the best team finish as they finished in fourth place as they were led by junior 152 pounder Mitchel Mangold as he took home gold picking up two falls on the way to the finals where he knocked off second ranked Joe Kelly of West Liberty 7-0. Independence finished in eighth place as they were led by 220 pound senior Hunter Crawford as he scored bonus points in all of his matches including a fall 1:40 in the finals over Henry Martens of Davenport Assumption. Heath Moyer of North Linn led the Lynx to 15th place as the sophomore used a late take down in the 113 pound final to down Michael McClelland of Don Bosco 9-5. For complete results click HERE.
In Delhi: Beckman went undefeated at the Wildcat Duals as their five dual wins came against Wilton, Center Point-Urbana, Starmont, Midland, and Maquoketa Valley. The Wildcats went 2-3 with wins over Starmont and Midland, and Starmont went 1-4 as they defeated Midland.
In Brooklyn: Anamosa was five and a half points better than Jesup as they won the Corky Stuart Invitational at BGM High School. The Blue Raiders had seven wrestlers place in the top three in their weight classes and were led by Morgan Rowley who went 5-0 on his way to a 126 pound title. For complete results click HERE.
