HS Wrestling: West Delaware Wins Outright WaMaC East Title

It was senior night inside the Seedorff Gymnasium last night as the West Delaware wrestling team moved to 7-0 in the WaMaC East after sweeping Anamosa and Beckman, and even more importantly they won their first outright WaMaC East title since 2013. The first dual of the evening saw Beckman take down Anamosa 53-15 as the Blazers had five pins and won 10 of the 13 matches including the featured match which saw Beckman 195 pounder Austin Koopman  bump up to 220 and defeat Connor Anderson 7-5. West Delaware followed with a rout of the Blue Raiders as they won the first 13 matches, nine of those coming by fall with two major decisions and in the final match Anamosa’s 10th ranked senior Morgan Rowley picked up a fall but the Hawks won the dual 75-6. In the featured dual between West Delaware and Beckman the Hawks had a 12-3 lead after three matches behind pins from senior Cole Engel and junior Mitchel Mangold, but the Blazers answered and took the lead 18-12 after pins from senior Luke Hageman and junior Owen Grover. West Delaware then won the next five matches picking up falls from senior Harrison Goebel at 220 and sophomore Luke Farmer at 106 to give the Hawks 36-18 lead and they would go on to win the dual 45-21 to claim the WaMaC East title. Senior 138 pounder Cole Engel talked about putting on that Hawk singlet for the final time at home:

195 pound senior Harrison Goebel who picked up career win number 100 two weeks ago at the Benton Community Invitational says one of the things he learned in his four years wrestling at West Delaware is that the reward is worth the hard work that you put into it:

Senior student coach Dylan Linderwell who hasn’t been able to wrestle since his freshman season has accepted his role as a student coach by coming to practice everyday and helping out in any way that he can says he enjoys being able to give advice to the younger wrestlers who may be struggling in their first season of wrestling in high school:

Senior Tristan Voelker who picked up two falls wrestling JV on Thursday night has been a varsity starter all four years of his career says the bond he has built with his teammates and the life lessons wrestling has taught him is something he will always remember:

The Hawks will wrestle again tomorrow at the Louisa Muscatine Invitational starting at 10:00 am.
