HS Wrestling: West Delaware, Independence Ready For “Highway 20 Clash”

The eighth meeting of the “Highway 20 Clash” between the West Delaware and Independence wrestling teams will take place tonight in Independence, as they two teams battle for the traveling Del-Buc Trophy. The third ranked Hawks enter with a 10-3 record after winning their first WaMaC East title since 2013 after a perfect 5-0 record and are coming off a second place finish at Louisa Muscatine Invitational. This dual marks the 58th meeting between the two teams, a series West Delaware leads 37-20 and 23rd year head coach Jeff Voss says the emphasis leading up to the dual tonight remains the same as all season, but he looks forward to renewing the rivalry:

Independence comes in winning the past six meetings between the two schools and have tied the series since the trophy’s inception in the 2009-2010 season as they have won the last four meetings in duals for the trophy. The Mustangs finished 2-1 Saturday at the East Marshall duals which raised their overall record to 15-12 and finished second on the West Side of the WaMaC going 4-1. Head coach Michael Doyle who’s in his 19th season at the helm for Independence says no matter how favored one team might be it’s always a good dual when these two communities get together for high school wrestling:

Many wrestlers from both schools have competed in this rivalry in the past and have made memories both good and some bad, but Doyle says he enjoys hearing from former athletes talking about the Indee, West Delaware dual meets:

All the hold by hold action of tonight’s dual can be heard live on KMCH and at KMCH.com starting at around 6:45 with Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske.
