HS Wrestling: Conference Wrestling Saturday

This past Saturday was the end of the regular season for our area wrestling teams as it was conference wrestling Saturday around the state.

In Maquoketa: The West Delaware wrestling team won the WaMaC Conference tournament for the first time since tying for first in 2014 as they scored 214.5 team points which was 19.5 points better than second place Solon. 13 Hawks placed in the top eight of the tournament and had one champion in junior Ryan Phillips who won the title at 132 pounds. Western Dubuque finished in fourth place with a 146.5 points as they were led by juniors Dawson Bierman at 106 and Devin Ludwig at 182 pounds who both reached the finals for the Bobcats. Independence scored 132.5 points which was good for sixth place as they had two individual champions as Cole Davis won the tournament at 170 pounds while Hunter Crawford took the crown at 220 pounds. Luke Hageman won the title at 160 pounds which led Beckman to a ninth place finish, and Morgan Rowley of Anamosa finished as the runner up at 126 pounds which led the Blue Raiders to a 14th place finish. In Alburnett: Three area teams finished in the top five at the Tri-Rivers Conference tournament. East Buchanan was the runner-up of the tournament finishing behind Lisbon as the Buccaneers had three champions in Max McGraw at 138 pounds, Heath Weber at 182, and Luke Recker at heavyweight. Ed-Co finished in third place with all 14 wrestlers placing in the tournament as Kal Hoeger at 120, Killian Welsh at 152 pounds, and Spencer Amling at 160 all reached the finals for the Vikings. Maquoketa Valley finished in fourth and we led by Mitch Smith who won the 160 pound title, and Heath Moyer won the 113 pound title to lead North Linn to a sixth place finish. In Calmar: Starmont finished sixth at the Upper Iowa Conference tournament which was hosted by South Winneshiek as the Stars were led by Mitchell Hayes who won the 126 pound title as he scored bonus points in both of his wins including a fall in the finals against Levi Lauer of North Fayette Valley. South Winneshiek took home the conference team title with MFL MarMac coming in second. For complete results click HERE.

In Wellman: Mid-Prairie hosted the River Valley Conference tournament on Saturday and Cascade finished the day with a third place team finish. The Cougars picked up individual gold medals from Aidan Noonan at 106 pounds and Nolan Noonan at 126 pounds and six other wrestlers placed in the top eight, and Monticello 113 pounder Kain Luensman won the title to lead the Panthers to a fourth place finish.
