HS BASKETBALL: Beckman Wins Final Boys WaMaC Conference Game With Western Dubuque

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The final WaMaC Conference Beckman and Western Dubuque Boys Basketball game lasted one hour and twenty minutes inside the Western Dubuque High School gymnasium last night in Epworth. The contest saw 4 ties and 4 lead changes as the Blazers took the lead for good late in the third quarter, winning 67-60. The Bobcats started out the game on a 5-0 run and led 15-12 after one quarter and 32-29 at halftime. The Blazers gained confidence and took the momentum after the break because of a near 70-foot 3-point shot just before the halftime horn sounded by sophomore Michael Keegan. Beckman went on a 20-9 run from that point to lead by 5 heading into the final quarter and were able to hold off the Bobcats by outscoring them 21-19 in the fourth. Blazer senior Mitch Gehling led the way with 17 points, Scott Olberding had 15, 14 for Jackson Bennett, 8 for CJ McDermott, 7 for Michael Keegan and 6 for Connor Krantz. Beckman first-year head coach and 2008 graduate Mike Molony said he was happy with the way his players stayed with the game plan and found ways to execute and make free throws down the stretch:

Sophomore Calvin Harris guided the Bobcats offense with 21 points and Jordan Lake had 14. Beckman is 11-6 overall and 7-5 good for fourth on the East side while the Bobcats are 13-4 and 10-2 in conference divisional play in first place ahead of 8-3 West Delaware. The Blazers now lead the series 14-10 in the past 24 meetings since 2006. The game ends 31 seasons where the two teams were in the same conference playing each other starting in the Big Bend Conference back in 1987.

On the boys side-

The 2nd place WD Hawks will host an important East division game against the third place Spartans of Solon. Junior Derek Krogamann scored 21 points in the 2-point win on the road in the Mount Vernon last Friday night and only needs 12 points to tie 1979 WD grad Casey Ditch as the third leading scorer in boys program history with 1,071 career points. Ditch reached that number in three seasons as well but did it without a three-point line as that didn’t come into play until 1982. We’ll have updates of that contest during our girls coverage in Solon.
