Six area wrestling teams will return to the mat tonight in the class 1A and 2A regional duals starting at 6:00 to compete for a chance to qualify for the state duals next Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The format for the regional duals features four teams at each site wrestling in two semifinal duals with the two winners wrestling in a final dual to advance to the state duals. In Manchester third ranked West Delaware will face Union La Porte City, a team the Hawks last saw at the Benton Community Invitational, however there were only two head-to-head match-ups between the two teams in the tournament as the Knights took both matches. The two teams will also have three first round match-ups at the district meet on Saturday in Independence so West Delaware head coach Jeff Voss says even though they lost the matches at Benton Community the kids have been very good this season about not worrying about who they have to wrestle:
With a win against Union the Hawks will face the winner of Dubuque Wahlert and Crestwood, and Voss says those are two very good teams that would provide a very good dual meet with them if they were to meet in the final:
Coverage of tonight’s dual gets underway at around 5:50 here on KMCH and at KMCH.com with Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske.
Also in class 2A tonight Beckman will travel to Davenport Assumption High School where they will wrestle in a semifinal against ninth ranked Washington with the winner to face the winner of fifth ranked Davenport Assumption and Mount Vernon, while Independence will be at West Liberty to face off against eighth ranked Solon with the winner moving on to face either seventh ranked West Liberty or Columbus Community.
In class 1A Maquoketa Valley and East Buchanan will both be in Denver tonight for their semifinals as Maquoketa Valley will face third ranked Denver while East Buchanan will take on ninth ranked Wapsie Valley with the two winners to meet in the finals, and Cascade will be at Don Bosco to wrestle Sigourney-Keota while the other semifinal features top ranked Don Bosco and Highland Riverside. Tune in to our coverage of the West Delaware regional dual as Jamie Vaske will have updates from all of the other regional dual scores.
