The Western Dubuque wrestling team was looking to make its second straight to the state duals last night as they traveled to Iowa City to take on Linn Mar and with a win take on Iowa City High in the regional dual finals. The Bobcats completed the first step of that process as they came out strong against Linn Mar as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first two weights getting a pin from heavyweight Nathan Simon and a win by 106 pounder Dawson Bierman. The Lions then battled back with three straight wins including two falls to take a 15-9 lead but the Bobcats rallied to win the final nine matches of the duals and picked up three falls in that stretch on their way to a 54-15 win and a match with sixth ranked Iowa City High. In the championship dual the Bobcats couldn’t ride the momentum from their first dual win and before they picked up their first win of the dual at 145 pounds they were in a 32-0 hole against the Little Hawks. Elijah Demmer got Western Dubuque on the board with an 11-1 major decision at 145, Jake Hosch won 11-8 at 170 pounds, Jedison Lux-Morales picked up a fall at 182, and Jason Simon-Ressler won a 4-3 decision at 220 pounds but City High showed why they’re the sixth ranked team in the state and went on to win the dual 53-16.
The Bobcats will return to action this Saturday as they will host a class 3A district tournament in Epworth starting at noon.
