HS Wrestling: 32 Area Wrestlers Advance To State

Saturday marked the end of the season for many high school wrestlers, but for 32 of our area wrestlers their postseason journey will continue this Thursday as they compete at the 2018 State Wrestling Tournament.

In Independence: West Delaware advance six wrestlers to the state meet as Mitchel Mangold, Jack Neuhaus, Jordan Bries, and Harrison Goebel all won district titles for the Hawks while Evan Woods and Carson Petlon qualified as runner-ups. Independence qualified three wrestlers to Des Moines as Matthew Doyle and Hunter Crawford won titles for the Mustangs with Jarret Orr finishing second.

In DeWitt: The Beckman wrestling team qualified four wrestlers to state this week in Grant Hoeger, Jake Recker, Luke Hageman, and Owen Grover. Monticello had three wrestlers advance as Kain Luensman, Chase Luensman, and Lake Stahlberg all qualified for the Panthers, while Anamosa’s Morgan Rowley will make his second straight trip to the state tournament.

In Jesup: All of the area schools from the Jesup district qualified a wrestler to the state meet as North Linn advance three wrestlers in Heath Moyer, Brady Henderson, and Quinton Rechkemmer. Parker Sternhagen and Chance Downs qualified for Maquoketa Valley, while Max McGraw and Braydon Nunemaker advancing for East Buchanan. Ed-Co’s Killian Welsh qualified at 152 pounds.

In Decorah: South Winneshiek hosted their district meet at Luther College and Starmont senior 126 pounder Mitchell Hayes qualified for the state tournament for the Stars.

In Epworth: Western Dubuque hosted a class 3A district and Bobcat nation showed up in full force helping the Bobcats qualify five wrestlers. Jared Cordes, Elijah Demmer, Ryker Kurimski, Jake Hosch, and Devin Ludwig will all wrestle at this week’s state meet.
