Two coverage area High School Boys Basketball teams earned wins in first round district last night and advanced on to the second round Thursday night.
In Guttenburg out of Class 1A, East Buchanan improved their record to 4-17 with a 59-42 victory over Clayton Ridge to end the Eagles season at 4-16. The Buccaneers will face the top-seeded Ed-Co Vikings in Edgewood Thursday night at 8pm.
Class 2A in Monticello, the 11-11 Panthers took down 6-16 North Cedar 66-57. Monti was led by senior Alex Nealson with 22 points, seniors Kyle Sperfslage and Jacob Manternach scored 17 and 11 respectively. Freshmen Justin Recker and Luke Lambert added 14 and 3. The Panthers jumped out in front early on with 5-0 run and led the entire game except for one tie early in the 1st quarter. They led by 4 at the end of the first, 9 at halftime and 10 after three quarters. Monticello, the three-seed, will go up against the 2nd-seeded Regals of Iowa City Regina at 6:30pm on Thursday evening in Cascade. The 2nd game there will have the number one seed Cougars playing West Branch, the Bears defeated Bellevue 77-58 in the first game in Monticello last night. 1A- Springville beat Midland 62-36, the Orioles will now face the top-seed and highly ranked North Linn Lynx near Troy Mills Thursday night at 8pm.
The postseason resumes for Girls Basketball tonight in Classes 1A and 2A. Our featured game from KMCH Sports will take place in Delhi where the 17-5 Wildcats welcome in the 19-2 Cougars of Sumner-Fredericksburg.
