Kids “Go Racing” During Extension’s After-School Program

Last week, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Delaware County finished up an after-school program at St. Mary’s School in Manchester.

The program was called “Let’s Go Racing!” and was held for three Wednesdays after school for 3rd and 4th graders.

Fifteen students learned about the engineering design process by building racers out of recycled materials. They explored different wheel systems and how to use different recycled materials to plan and create a functional racer. From CDs to yogurt containers to pop bottles to cereal boxes, each car was unique and made out of different materials. On the last day of the program, students tested out their racer on an obstacle track and competed in a racer rally.
