It was a whirlwind of emotions for the Edgewood-Colesburg Boys Basketball family on Friday and Saturday night. After being postponed because of icy conditions Thursday night. The Vikings topped Wapsie Valley in exciting fashion inside Oelwein High School Friday night 69-57 in overtime to advance on to the program’s first ever Substate Final, Saturday night in Independence. On the short turnaround Ed-Co went up against Class 1A 7th-ranked Dunkerton and in another action packed tight contest held on to win 59-57 to capture the first ever Boys Basketball state appearance in school district history and since Edgewood and Colesburg combined in 1961. Tenth-year head coach Justin Olind talked about the emotions that were felt and how happy he is for everyone involved especially his players:
Ed-Co was one of three KMCH Sports coverage area schools that etched their names into the respective state tournament brackets Saturday night.
Also in 1A, top-ranked 26-0 North Linn crusied to their 4th qualification of state basketball since 1976 and 2nd in a row. The Lynx pounded Gladbrook-Reinbeck 84-41 at Vinton-Shellsburg High School.
In Class 2A-
The 23-1 Cascade Cougars earned their 10th all-time trip since 1993 by beating their Highway 136 rival Beckman Blazers in Manchester 53-41. For the Cougars it is their 5th consecutive appearance and 6th out of the past 8 seasons. Beckman ended a 14-9 campaign under first-year head coach Michael Molony and say goodbye to 10 seniors.
