The Monticello Panthers Girls Basketball team won their Class 3A quarterfinal yesterday afternoon at the 2018 state tournament in Des Moines over Clear Lake 61-50. The Panthers led for most of the game after the first part of quarter number one as the game saw 4 lead changes and 1 tie. Monti led by one at the end of the first then increased their lead by 7 at halftime and back to 5 before the fourth quarter which saw the Panthers outscore the Lions by 6. Sixteenth-year head coach Donnie Kremer talks about what he was most happy about from his squad:
Sophomore Jordan Kuper explains the positives she saw in her teammates:
Senior Taylor McDonald describes the game as she saw it:
The Panthers were led by senior Lauren Ries who tallied 22 points and with her 16th point midway through the 3rd quarter became the third Panther player in school history to reach the 1,000 point mark. Ries comments on how special it was to achieve that milestone and to be able to share it with her teammate and best friend Taylor McDonald, who reached that feat on Feb. 2nd:
McDonald adds her thoughts on Ries’ achievement:
Kuper had 15 and McDonald added 14 while Maddie Lambert chipped in with 7, 2 for Caitlyn Cruise and 1 for Carly Hayen. The 6th-seeded Panthers improved to 20-5, the first 20-win season for the program since 2012 and will advance to a semifinal against the 2-seed Sioux Center Thursday night at 6:45pm.
