This past Saturday Grand View senior and 2013 West Delaware graduate Dean Broghammer won his second NAIA heavyweight title with an 8-4 win over Demetrius Thomas of Williams Baptist (Ark). Broghammer kicked off the tournament on Friday with three straight falls to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals he pinned Jesse Gomez of Missouri Valley in 4:07 to set up a championship match with the second ranked Thomas. In the finals Thomas dented the scoreboard first with a takedown just over a minute in to the first period but Broghammer quickly countered with a reversal and tied the match going into the second. In the second Broghammer chose down and escaped quickly and scored a takedown of his own with just eight seconds left to take a 5-2 lead into the third period where he gave up another takedown but quickly reversed Thomas, and after a point for riding time was awarded he would go on to win the match 8-4 becoming just the third wrestler in Grand View’s program history to be a four time All-American. Broghammer also won the tournament’s Gorriaran Award for the most falls in the shortest amount of time which he tallied four falls in nine minutes and 44 seconds while also leading Grand View to their seventh straight national title as they won by 64.5 points over second place Cumberlands (KY).
