College Wrestling: Voss Ready For First National Tournament

2014 West Delaware graduate and Coe College junior Jake Voss is set to wrestle in his first Division III national tournament this weekend at the Cleveland Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. Voss a three time state place-winner for the Hawks is the sixth seed at 174 pounds and will open the tournament against unseeded Troy Seymour of Oswego State. Voss says he hasn’t looked at the brackets, but he is looking forward to the opportunity to compete at nationals:

After graduating from West Delaware Voss went on to play baseball for Central College for a year, but after one season away from the mat he felt like something was missing:

One of the things that made the transition back into wrestling easy for Voss was the similarities in the family atmosphere that Coe provided with the same atmosphere he grew up in at West Delaware:

With Voss’ younger brother Jared being a freshman at West Delaware and graduating from the AAU circuit, it allowed their dad and West Delaware head coach Jeff attend the regional two weeks ago in Dubuque and Voss says it meant a lot to have his dad in attendance:

And even though he’s there spectating Voss says there’s still some coaching from his dad when he comes home:

2017 Western Dubuque grad and Millikin University freshman Bradan Birt is also in the tournament field as he earned the fourth seed at 149 pounds and will open with unseeded Trevor Corl of Lycoming in the first round, and Birt also looks to make the most out of his first national tournament:

Birt’s father Ryan is the head coach of Millikin and his brother Tristan is also on the roster and both can usually be found in Birt’s corner when he takes the mat and he says there is definitely a comfort level when they are:

Wrestling gets underway at 10:00 am this morning and you can follow along with the action at
