The Iowa DNR has added White Pine Hollow State Preserve near Luxemburg to its list of areas planned for spring burns.
DNR officials say fire was historically an important part of perpetuating this unique forest ecosystem, and area managers will be including fire more often to properly manage this site.
Other areas scheduled for burns this spring include Buffalo Creek in Delaware County, Whitewater in Dubuque County and Muskrat Slough and Oxford Junction in Jones County.
Prescribed burns help improve wildlife habitat, control invasive plant species and reduce the potential for wildfires.
Areas are typically burned every one to five years.
