Richard M. Fitzpatrick – Edgewood

Richard Martin Fitzpatrick, 77, of Edgewood, Iowa, died on Friday, June 8, 2018, at his residence.  He was born on July 9, 1940, at home on his parents’ farm near Greeley, the son of Edward and Lena (Rhine) Fitzpatrick.  Richard attended country school near Greeley and then graduated from Greeley High School in 1958.  He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably from 1958 to 1961.

On December 1, 1962, Richard was united in marriage to JoAnn Hoeger at St. John’s Catholic Church in Delhi by Monsignor Duggan.  Six children were born to this union.  Richard sold Combined Insurance for a short period of time and worked for GM Services as a parts man.  After that he began farming.

Richard was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society in Greeley and was a member at St. Mark Catholic Church in Edgewood.  He raised Belgian draft horses and enjoyed driving them in parades.  Richard enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and going on hayrides with his friends.  He especially loved his family and spending time with them.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, JoAnn Fitzpatrick of Edgewood; his five children, Joe (Karla) Fitzpatrick of Toddville, Julie Fitzpatrick of Waukee, Mark (Sheri) Fitzpatrick of Greeley, Janet (Mike) Oldfather of Edgewood, and Kimberly (Brian) Snyder of Earlville; 14 grandchildren, Ashley (Brian) Jasper, Jessica (Taylor Ciha) Fitzpatrick, Emily Fitzpatrick, Stacy (Ryan) Zitelman, Jacob Fitzpatrick, Kari (Gabe Hamlett) Fitzpatrick, Haley Fitzpatrick, Andy (Amanda) Oldfather, Kristy Oldfather, Nick (Bailee Garmoe) Oldfather, Austin Snyder, Ben Snyder, Hugh Clausen, and Vaughan Clausen; four great-grandchildren, Garrett Jasper, Joelle Jasper, Parker Oldfather, and Isla Zitelman; one sister, Pam Mann of Cedar Rapids; two brothers-in-law, Don (Carlyn) Hoeger of Delhi and Jim (Diane) Hoeger of Earlville; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Diane Clausen; two brothers, Thomas and Dennis Fitzpatrick; and a brother-in-law, Dave Mann.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Hospital or the Divine Word Seminary in Epworth.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., on Friday, June 15, 2018, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Edgewood, with Rev. John Haugen presiding.

Visitation:  3:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood.  Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Interment with Military Rites:  St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery  –  Greeley, Iowa
