Six Dairy Quiz Bowl Teams represented Delaware County well again this year at the State Contest, held at the Starmont High School. While they didn’t place first this year, they competed well in the tough competition.
Members of our top Junior Team are Alia Domeyer- Delhi (Captain), Haley Ronnebaum- Earlville, Audrey Kruse- Dyersville and Katherine Comley- Ryan. They won every match until the final, when Fayette County came back to beat them, then again in the second close match to win the division. Our second and third teams of first-year members placed 4th and 5th respectively and did a great job; learning a lot! Those team members were (2) Tyler Hoeger- Delhi (Captain), Ford Domeyer- Delhi, Ashlyn Kruse- Dyersville and (2) Addison Stoerp- New Vienna (Captain), Bianka Ronnebaum- Earlville and Amelia Schnieders- Manchester.
In the Intermediate division, a two-round championship battle was also necessary as Dubuque County edged the members of our first Intermediate team to win the division. Team members are (1) Tara Goedken- Hopkinton (Captain), Sarah Goedken- Hopkinton, Carter Kruse- Dyersville and Lane Domeyer, Delhi. Our second team fought tough competition and placed 5th (2) Courtney Goedken- Hopkinton, Sydney Demmer- Dundee and Carson Schnieders- Manchester.
The Senior team battled hard and placed 3rd in their division. Team members are Amber Engelken- Earlville (Captain), Lauren Goldsmith- Earlville and Mary Holtz- Maquoketa (Jackson County).
Each year the Delaware County DQB kids excel on their tests and this year was no different. They recognized the top test score in each division. Delaware County had the top individual test score in the Junior division- Alia Domeyer (tied with a Fayette County 4-Her).
Coaching this year’s teams were Jennifer Zumbach, Brian Bagge, Josh Thibadeau, Amanda Engelken, Becca Hermann, James Goldsmith and Tehya Demmer. Thank you to the kids, parents and those who volunteered time to prepare them for this contest.
Nearly fifty youth participated in the quiz bowl contest. The scores of a written exam, team questions and toss-up competition combined to determine the winners of each match in this double elimination event. The Ron Orth 4-H Dairy Endowment Fund provided various awards for the event along with the Delaware County 4-H Foodstand Fund, which helps defer some costs for 4-Hers participating in out-of-county or state activities in return for youth working shifts during the Delaware County Fair throughout their 4-H years.
