Independence Man Sentenced to Prison for Thefts and Burglaries

An Independence man has been sentenced to prison for multiple thefts and burglaries.

The Buchanan County Attorney’s Office says 48-year old James Reuther was sentenced to 25 years.

Independence Police had stopped Reuther in February for routine traffic violations when they found he was in possession of a trailer stolen from Cedar Falls. A couple weeks later, he was again stopped by police and found with a stolen trailer from Independence.

After executing search warrants on two storage sheds rented to Reuther and a Reuther’s home in March, officers found multiple items stolen from multiple victims. More stolen property was discovered in additional search warrants later that month.

Reuther pleaded guilty to six counts of Second Degree Theft and one count of Third Degree Burglary. Along with his 25-year sentence, Reuther must pay various surcharges, court costs and restitution to the victims.
