One Person Dead After SUV Submerges into Clermont Pond

One person is dead after a vehicle submerged into a Fayette County pond Tuesday night.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened at Skip-A-Way RV Park and Campground in Clermont. A 911 call came in shortly after 9 pm.

A preliminary investigation has determined that 30-year old Steven Baker, Jr. of Elgin was driving his SUV in the campground when he went out of control, drove through a chain fence and into the pond. Authorities say the area where the vehicle went into the pond was about eighteen to twenty feet deep, with the vehicle totally submerged when emergency personnel arrived.

Rescue efforts were unsuccessful. Baker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
