Public Warned to Stay Away from Flood Prone Areas

Numerous flood warnings have been issued across eastern Iowa, leading authorities to warn the public to stay away from flood prone areas.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is strongly encouraging everyone to stay out of streams, creeks and rivers for the next several days.

Authorities are also urging everyone to use great caution while driving. Remember:

  • Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing you to lose control and potentially stall your vehicle
  • A foot of water will float many vehicles
  • And two feet of rushing water will carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickups

Trying to drive through hazardous conditions not only puts you at danger – it also puts first responders at risk by forcing them to perform water rescue activities in dangerous conditions.
