A Central City woman has been charged with murder after hitting a bicyclist several weeks ago.
Authorities are now saying 59-year old Melinda Lawrence intentionally hit 54-year old Jeffrey Scott of Central City with her car while he was riding his bicycle on August 30th.
In a press release today, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office says Lawrence was driving home around 11 pm when she spotted Scott riding his bike pulling a cart in the area of North Marion Road and Barber Street in Central City. Lawrence followed Scott into the back parking lot of Dollar General and intentionally drove towards him, striking both him and his bike. She then left the scene, with the cart that was attached to his bike now pinned underneath her car as she drove away.
Minutes later, a deputy saw Lawrence driving with something dragging underneath her car and, after pulling her over, noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from her car. At about that same time, witnesses were calling 911 to report a man unresponsive behind the Dollar General store and giving a description of the vehicle involved.
Scott died from his injuries at the scene.
Lawrence was detained, but went unconscious and was taken to a local hospital. Her blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
Lawrence has been arrested on charges of First Degree Murder, Homicide by Vehicle and Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Accident.
