A Fayette County woman has been charged with murder in the death of her baby.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says 28-year old Alicia Rios of Elgin was taken into custody Friday morning.
The arrest comes after a month-long investigation into the death of five-week old Lydia Rios. A 911 call was made on August 21st reporting that the baby was having trouble breathing. She was airlifted to the hospital, where she died five days later.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation became involved in the case, which led to the arrest of the baby’s mother on Friday.
Alicia Rios faces one count of First Degree Murder and Child Endangerment Causing Death. If convicted, she could spend life in prison without the possibility of parole.
